Deixis Book Club
Not a real book club (yet), just a bit about what we’re currently reading.
Halima is currently reading In Search of Our Mother’s Gardens by Alice Walker
In Search of Our Mother’s Gardens is a collection of essays, interviews, and letters by Alice Walker that detail Black womanhood and how it affects her eagerness to write and live as freely as she desires. It’s an analysis of other writers, and her own writing, and has tons of details of her southern upbringing, which I have seen outline many others’ lives, never mine. It influences you to want to go to the South and scour all the writing that Alice Walker has ever written, as well as all the writing that she’s been influenced by (Zora Neale Hurston, Jean Toomer, Flannery O’Connor).
A fantastic read thus far.

An Excerpt from Alice Walker’s book
“I started out writing this poem in great anger; hurt, really. I thought I could write a magnificently vicious poem. Yet, even in the first draft, it did not turn out that way… what you really feel, underneath everything else, will present itself. Your job is not to twist that feeling.”
